Buying sails for your race boat is an absolute minefield: How to get a good deal and a fast boat. Part 2

Part two of two. Part one told the story of how sailmaking became an engineering business. This part is about spending your own money

The tender part
The old mainsail has not fallen apart, but the draft is creeping aft, the leech wants more tension than it used to, and the boat is no longer holding its lane off the start. So you do the sensible thing and ask three leading sailmakers to quote.
North comes back with one proposal. Quantum offers another. Doyle suggests a third. Three familiar logos, three technologies, three salesmen, three prices. It looks like a properly competitive tender.
Since August 2024, North Sails, Quantum Sails and Doyle Sails have all belonged to the same parent company, North Technology Group.
That does not mean they make the same sails. They emphatically do not. Their designers, technologies, product ranges and loft networks remain distinct, they continue to compete for orders, and NTG’s own announcement is explicit that the brands will keep “competing for market share”. But what looks like a choice between three independent global businesses is no longer quite that.
So before you spend the money, it is worth knowing what the market actually looks like now.
The engine nobody calls the engine
First, the stakes, because, perhaps, owners under-think this decision.
On a racing boat the engine is not the thing under the companionway steps. That is for getting out of the marina and charging the batteries. The engine is the sail wardrobe. It is the only part of the boat that turns weather into distance, and everything else, the hull, the keel, the rig, the crew, exists to hold it in the right shape and point it in the right direction.
Nobody buys a car without asking about the engine. Nobody would order one on price alone, from whoever quoted last, having specified nothing beyond roughly how big it should be.
However, that is how most of us buy sails.
After the boat itself it is the largest cheque an owner writes, and it influences where you finish more than anything else you can buy. New winches will not do it. A fairing job will not do it. A season of practice will do a great deal, and I will come back to that, but you cannot practise your way past a mainsail that is the wrong shape for your rig.
The market as it stands in 2026
Who owns whom
NTG’s acquisition of Quantum and Doyle is the largest recent change to the landscape and it deserves a fair hearing on both sides.
North is the largest single sailmaking brand and holds the most recognisable proprietary technology in 3Di. Quantum, founded in 1996, built a formidable international network with strong positions in one-design and grand prix racing. Doyle developed Stratis and became highly influential in superyachts. All three now sit under one owner, backed by Oakley Capital, which has held the majority of NTG since 2014.
The case for it is stronger than critics allow. Advanced sailmaking needs capital, and a great deal of it. Proprietary materials, design software, three-dimensional moulding plant, global service networks and a decade of loss-making research do not fund themselves out of a good season. 3Di and Stratis exist because somebody underwrote years of development no independent loft of ordinary size could have carried. Shared financial strength also solves the succession problem that quietly kills founder-led businesses. None of that is cynical.
The case against is also real. Consolidation reduces the number of genuinely independent technology businesses and concentrates purchasing power with the cloth suppliers. UK Sailmakers responded by emphasising that its lofts remain independently owned. Their general manager, Heather Mahady, put the question directly:
“How can fewer options in the market be beneficial for sailors?”
It deserves a fair answer, which is that NTG’s own chief executive says he wants the competition to continue. Sam Watson told Sailing World in September 2024:
“I kind of want that to continue, actually. I want our guys out there to be still battling to win over the customer.”
Take him at his word. It is the most useful sentence anyone in this story has said, because it tells you the rivalry between those three brands is now a management choice rather than a structural fact. That is not an accusation. It is simply the difference between competition that exists because it must and competition that exists because someone has decided it should. Is it believeable?
The scale, because the numbers surprise people
There is no published market share data for sailmaking. No trade body collects it and nobody files it, so anyone quoting you a percentage has estimated it. What can be counted is physical presence, taken from each company’s own locations pages on the same day.

Three of the top five now answer to one owner.
North’s own list, broken down by country, is worth a moment because it tells you where the money actually is:

Note Austria and Switzerland. Four lofts each, and not a metre of coastline between them. Lake sailing is a larger part of this industry’s revenue than offshore sailors like to think, and it is one reason the big networks look the way they do.
Meanwhile Incidence, the largest sailmaking group in France, is reported at around €26m turnover and 200 people.
Hold on to that last figure. The biggest sailmaking group in France turns over roughly the same as a mid-sized regional business. This is not a giant crushing minnows. It is a small industry, and consolidation is largely what happens when a small industry runs out of room to grow.

The United States: the biggest market, and the most contested
Roughly half of the people reading this are American, and the US market deserves its own answer, because it does not work like the British or European ones.
The industry’s centre of gravity has always been American, so we are led to beleive. Ulmer opened in New York in 1946. Ted Hood was building sails and weaving his own cloth in Marblehead. Lowell North founded North Sails in San Diego in 1957. David Ullman founded Ullman Sails in Newport Beach in 1967. Quantum was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Traverse City, Michigan, and describes itself as the second largest sailmaker in the world.
Three of the four biggest global brands are American in origin. The fourth, Doyle, is a New Zealand business.
And here is the twist. The largest sailmaking group in the world is American in operation and British in ownership. NTG’s chief executive sits in Connecticut. Its majority owner is Oakley Capital, a British private equity firm.
Consolidation in America did not begin in 2024. In 2017 Quantum acquired Hood Sailmakers of Middletown, Rhode Island. So Ted Hood’s business, one of the founding names of modern American sailmaking, was absorbed by Quantum, and Quantum was in turn absorbed by NTG seven years later. Two acquisitions, and a name that shaped the industry now sits two levels down inside somebody else’s group.
The counter-example is also American, and it matters. When NTG bought Doyle, Doyle One Design was excluded. It remains a separate business in Salem, Massachusetts, founded in 1982 by Robbie Doyle and run independently. A specialist that knows one set of classes better than anybody can hold its ground against a giant, and did.
How small and large lofts actually compete in America
Three features make the US market different, and each one changes where an independent can win.
One: distance defeats the word “local”. In Britain, three lofts within an hour of your mooring is normal. On Chesapeake Bay, the Great Lakes or the Pacific Northwest, your nearest serious loft may be several hundred miles away. That reverses the usual argument. In the US, a large network is often the one that can actually get somebody to your boat, and the small independent competes by being genuinely expert in your fleet.
Two: one-design is where the independents win. The American racing scene is far more one-design dominated than the British one: J/70, Melges, Etchells, Lightning, Thistle, Flying Scot and a long list besides. In a frozen design, nobody can sell you a technology advantage. What they can sell you is tuning knowledge, class-specific shape development and somebody who was on the podium at your nationals. That is a specialist’s game, and it is precisely why a business like Doyle One Design survives.
Three: the Great Lakes are a market of their own. Look at where the lofts cluster and you will find Chicago, Cleveland, Traverse City, Door County, Michigan, the Erie Islands and Lake Champlain. Freshwater, flat water, short chop, an intense one-design culture and a season measured in months rather than the year round. Sails developed for the Solent or for Newport are not automatically the right compromise there, and lofts that understand it hold real regional loyalty.
The practical consequence for an American reader. The four business models earlier in this article apply exactly as they do in Europe, but the weighting changes. Ask harder about who will physically come to your boat, and ask about class-specific experience rather than general technology. In a one-design fleet, the question “who designed the sails on the boat that won our nationals” is worth more than any brochure.

One further fact, stated plainly. NTG’s portfolio also holds Southern Spars, Hall Spars, Future Fibres and Rig Pro, four businesses that were once rivals in spars and rigging. It also holds YachtScoring, the regatta results platform. It is worth knowing.
Two ownership models, both defensible
The most useful way to understand the market is not big against small. It is two different answers to one question: who should own a sailmaking brand?
NTG’s answer is capital. Private equity holds the brands, funds the research and carries the losses through the development years. That is how 3Di and Stratis got built, and the sport has benefited.
UK Sailmakers gives the opposite answer. In 2013 Butch Ulmer sold the group to a large number of its own loft owners. The lofts own the brand, profits are reinvested rather than extracted, and each loft manager has personal capital in the outcome. Nearly 50 lofts sit inside that structure.
They are different mechanisms for solving the same problem: sailmaking needs both capital and care, and those two things pull in opposite directions.

How it actually looks on the ground - the loft:
There are four routes to a sail wardrobe as I see it:
One: the traditional full-service loft. It measures the boat, designs the sail, cuts the panels, assembles and finishes it, fits it and repairs it later. British independents such as Sanders and Kemp still make sails in their own UK premises.
Two: the local relationship, backed by central manufacturing. Your sailmaker measures the rig, discusses the programme, specifies the sail and looks after you. The sail itself is built at a large facility elsewhere.
Three: central membrane production, finished locally. The load-bearing structure is made at a specialist plant, then shipped to be completed, inspected and delivered by a loft nearer you.
Four: industrialised remote production. Design files travel electronically to a large facility in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand or Tunisia, where skilled teams build sails at a scale no local loft could approach.
Several well-known names are open about this. Hyde moved its main manufacturing to a wholly owned facility in Cebu in the Philippines in 2003. Elvstrøm owns its Tunisian operation. Rolly Tasker built an enormous plant in Phuket. Ullman’s Cape Town operation supplies its worldwide network. North and Quantum both have substantial production in Sri Lanka.
Offshore manufacture is not inferior manufacture. A large purpose-built facility may have better machinery, tighter process control and vastly more repetition than a small loft. A sail made in Britain does not fly better for being local. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you geography.

The layer below
There is another tier owners never see.
A large share of the world’s woven and laminated sail material comes from a handful of textile companies: Dimension-Polyant, Challenge Sailcloth, Contender and Bainbridge. A village loft and a global brand can both be building from cloth woven by the same supplier.
Membrane production concentrates the same way. Evolution Sails runs a plant in Auckland called EM2 and, on the company’s own account, 45 other sailmaking businesses worldwide rely on its New Zealand-made membrane blanks.
Read that with your own inventory in mind. The name on the tack frequently does not identify who made the load-bearing structure underneath it.
What a small loft is actually selling you

Small lofts are now more important than ever before
Almost every article on this subject collapses into sentiment about the vanishing craftsman. That is not the argument, and it does small lofts no favours.
Here is what a good independent genuinely sells, stated as capabilities rather than romance:
Attention as a business model. A small loft sells attention because attention is all it has to sell. A large loft allocates attention to the accounts that justify it, and it should, because that is where its money and reputation are. If your boat is a 33-footer sailed by six friends, you will get more of somebody’s afternoon at the smaller shop. That is arithmetic, not virtue.
Local recut capability. This is the most underrated item on the entire list. A sail that can be altered eight miles away, in the week, by the person who designed it, is worth more than a marginally better sail that has to go back to a central facility for six weeks.
Skin in the game. Charles “Butch” Ulmer is worth listening to here, because he is not a bystander. He is the son of the man who opened the first Ulmer loft in 1946, he ran the business from 1968, and in 2013 he sold it to his loft owners rather than to a buyer:
“Good sails always have some design and material differences that cater to local conditions and who better to define those differences than a local sailmaker with ‘skin in the game’.”
Knowledge of your actual water. Local conditions are real. Solent chop, Irish Sea swell and Baltic flat water reward different compromises, and somebody who races where you race has an opinion worth paying for.
And the honest counterweight, because this cuts both ways and I will not pretend otherwise. A small loft can be exceptional, or it can be one man behind on his order book with nobody to cover when he is ill. Scale buys real things: continuity, a warranty that will still exist in four years, a design database built from thousands of boats, and a loft in the next port when something tears at three in the morning off Alderney.
Both models have a genuine failure mode. Choose with your eyes open rather than on ideology.
One detail changes how you read the name on the tack. Several lofts trading under an international brand are local businesses with their own names underneath. The OneSails loft in Brisbane is LR Sails. In Germany it is Heino Haase Segel. In Lorient it is Sail Solution. At Hamble Point it was Parker and Kay, founded in 1990 by Peter Kay and John Parker, before it took the OneSails name in 2012. Local businesses with named owners, buying into shared design software and shared membrane technology, keeping their own name on the invoice.
That is not a smaller version of a big loft. It is a different structure, and very successful.
Choosing the technology without being sold a word
Sailmaking vocabulary has become a thicket of trade names, and the colour black has acquired an almost magical status. A black sail may contain carbon, or black Technora, or a black polyester fibre, or simply a black surface. Colour tells you very little.
There are four broad families of upwind construction. What separates them is not really the material. It is how the load gets carried, and how much of the sail’s shape is sewn in rather than built in.
1. Woven polyester, which most people still call Dacron. Cloth is woven on a loom, cut into panels, and the panels are sewn together. The oldest method and still the right answer for most boats. It tolerates flogging, sunlight and rough handling. In exchange it stretches, so the shape the designer drew slowly goes away. Buy it when: club racing or cruising, a boat sailed hard by amateurs, a budget that has to work.
2. Laminates. A sandwich. Film in the middle, woven surfaces on the outside, load-bearing fibres in between. Still cut into panels and sewn, but the panels are laid out radially, so the fibres run along the lines the load actually takes rather than across them. Holds its shape better than woven cloth and weighs less. Costs more, and wears out sooner. Buy it when: serious club and IRC racing, where holding shape matters more than lasting a decade.
3. Membranes. No cloth off a roll. Fibres are laid down for one specific sail, following that sail’s own load map, then bonded into a single skin. Doyle Stratis, Quantum Fusion M and Elvstrøm EPEX are the ones you will be quoted, and they are different engineering answers rather than the same product under three labels. Buy it when: a committed programme that needs the shape to hold across a wide range of wind.
4. Moulded composites. Built on or as a three-dimensional structure rather than assembled flat, so more of the shape is built into the sail and less of it is sewn into it. North 3Di, OneSails 4T FORTE, Elvstrøm XYLO. The most expensive, and the longest-holding shape. Buy it when: top-end racing, and increasingly long-distance cruising, where weight and the life of the shape justify the price.
The boundary between the last two is not as clean as the marketing implies, and lofts draw it in different places. Do not spend long arguing about which side of it a given product sits on. The order that matters runs from cheap and tough at one end to expensive and precise at the other, and where you sit on it is a decision about how the boat is used, not about quality.

Now the nuance that cuts both ways, because it is where most owners are misled.
Take the structured luff, where load is carried in the body of the sail rather than in a cable up the front. North calls it Helix. Doyle calls it Structured Luff, or Cableless. OneSails calls it IFS, and ZS for jibs. Incidence calls it Strong Luff.
The concept is universal. Every serious loft offers a version, and four trademarks can give an owner the impression he is being offered four inventions when he is being offered four approaches to one. But the engineering genuinely does differ. Quantum, for instance, describes Fusion M as isostrain rather than load path, using an integrated fibre network addressing the sail’s loadings as a whole. Agree with it or not, that is a real engineering position, not marketing.
Both things are true at once, and the marketing blurs which is which.
So the useful question is never which description sounds most impressive. It is the balance between initial shape, retained shape, physical life, weight, handling, repairability and price. A light grand prix sail may have a superb competitive life and respond badly to flogging and chafe. A heavier cruising sail may be slower on day one and hold useful shape for thousands more miles.
“Best” has no meaning until the use is defined.

What is actually new
Four things have changed in the last few years that a sensible owner should know about, and none of them is a new fibre.

1. You can now measure your own flying shape
For decades the argument about whether a sail was any good was conducted by two people squinting up at it and disagreeing. That has changed.
Photogrammetry and lidar systems now reconstruct a sail’s real flying shape rather than its designed shape. Research systems using paired waterproof cameras have reported precision of around 15 millimetres, and commercial services exist at both ends of the market: lidar-based systems for professional programmes, and image-based analysis such as Sailemetry that needs little more than a camera and contrasting draft stripes on the sail.
Why it matters to you. You can now take evidence to a recut conversation instead of an opinion. If you are spending real money, put draft stripes on the new main and photograph it properly in the first month, in a range of conditions. It costs almost nothing and it turns “it looks a bit full” into a measurement your sailmaker can act on.
2. Structured luff has quietly changed the hardware bill
The cableless approach does more than improve shape. It removes furling cables and their loads, which changes what you need on the bow and can simplify a shorthanded sail plan considerably. If you are re-thinking a headsail wardrobe, get the loft to price the whole system, not the sail alone. The saving is sometimes in the ironmongery.
3. Sails have become a disposal problem, and there are now answers
This is the number that should stop you. In the UK, around 97 per cent of end-of-life sails go to landfill, and in most other countries the figure is higher still.
Two things have changed.
Construction. Film-free composite structures such as OneSails’ 4T Forte are built to be recyclable, and the technology carries ISO 14040 life-cycle assessment certification. That is a real technical lead, and it is held by a network of independently owned lofts rather than by the largest group in the sport.
Disposal. The ReSail platform, run by the not-for-profit Clean Sailors, now lists drop-off points where old sails are collected and repurposed. It began as a pilot in 2021 and now covers 38 drop-offs across 11 countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland and Greece. Old sails become bags, covers, deckchairs, and in some cases sails for smaller boats.
What to do about it. Ask the question at the point of purchase, not at the point of disposal. “What happens to this sail at the end of its life, and will you take it back?” is a fair question and the answers are becoming a genuine differentiator.
4. The second-hand market has grown up
Brokered used racing sails are now a real option, particularly for a boat that needs a delivery main, a heavy-weather jib used four times a season, or a spare kite. A two-season-old sail from a well-run programme, correctly measured for your rig, is frequently a better buy than a new sail from the bottom of somebody’s range.
The trap is fit. A used sail is only cheap if it fits your rig, and the recut to make it fit can cost more than the saving. Get the loft to assess it before you buy it, not after.
The process, and the tender pack
Now the practical part.
Do not ask three lofts what a mainsail costs. You will get three numbers that cannot be compared, you will pick the middle one for reasons you cannot articulate, and you will have learned nothing.
Instead, write the specification yourself, send the identical document to all three, and require all three to answer it in writing. That document is the tender pack, and it has three sections.
A. What you specify
These are yours to state, not theirs to assume.
The exact cloth or membrane specification: fibre, orientation, weight, and taffeta on one side, both or neither.
The design wind range, and the crew number you actually sail with. Not your Cowes Week crew. The number aboard on a wet Thursday in April.
Batten count, batten hardware and headboard, by manufacturer and part.
Reef points, reef hardware, and who fits it, including whether the price assumes your existing hardware works.
Your rating position, if you race under IRC, and whether the sail is intended to change it.
B. What you require them to answer
Who will measure the boat, on the boat, and will they measure the rig or work from a drawing?
Who will design the sail, and have they worked with this class or a genuinely comparable boat?
Where will the structural material or membrane be produced?
Where will the sail be assembled and finished?
What finished weight are you quoting?
What physical life and what useful shape life should I expect?
Is a sea trial included, and is one recut included? Within what window, and who pays for the sailing time?
Can it be altered or recut locally, and by whom?
What exactly does the warranty cover, and what voids it? Specifically, what happens if the sail is used above its stated wind range?
Delivery date, and what happens if it slips past a race I have already entered?
Can I speak to owners of comparable boats using the same product, and can I inspect a three or four year old example rather than only a new one?
That last one may be the best of the lot. Almost every new sail looks impressive on delivery day. The revealing sail is the one that has done two seasons, been reefed in anger, spent a night flogging in a sloppy sea and had its first repair.

The timing nobody plans for
Three practical points that cost owners places every season.
Order in the autumn, not the spring. Every loft in the northern hemisphere is overloaded from February. An autumn order buys you a designer’s attention, a sensible delivery date and time for a recut before the first race that matters.
Build the sea trial into the schedule, not the hope. A sail delivered the week before a regatta cannot be assessed, and a recut is then impossible. Take delivery with at least six sailing weeks in hand.
Photograph it in the first month. See the flying shape section above. Evidence gathered early is what makes a warranty conversation or a recut conversation short.
What two quotations that differ by thousands are actually telling you
They are frequently not quotations for the same thing.
One mainsail price may include premium slides, full-length battens, two reefs, numbers, insignia, a bag, measurement, fitting and a day on the water. Another may leave half of that as extras.
Beyond the material, a price can contain design and structural engineering, manufacturing labour, hardware and finishing, freight, duty and currency exposure, local measurement and project management, commissioning and tuning, recuts, after-sales service, warranty, accumulated class design data, and the cost of sponsorship, professional sailors and marketing.
Labour location matters, but cheap labour does not reliably produce a cheap bad sail, any more than expensive local labour guarantees a good one. Scale, training, machinery and repetition can make a large overseas facility exceptionally consistent.
I am not going to publish a price table and I would be sceptical of anyone who does. There is no reliable published price data for racing sails. No trade body collects it, nobody files it, and what circulates online is American cruising data that would mislead a British owner buying an IRC inventory.
What I can tell you is my own experience. The difference between the quotes I had was immense. Not marginal, not a matter of shopping around at the edges. I was not buying a cheaper sail. I was buying a sail from someone for whom my boat was a real job rather than a rounding error, and the price followed from that rather than causing it.
When you lay three completed tender packs side by side, most of the difference will sit in the measurement, the sea trial and recut, and the delivery guarantee. Those are exactly the items that decide whether the sail is still fast in eighteen months. The cloth, which is what you thought you were comparing, will usually be much the same across all three.
When not to buy a sail at all

This section will cost me friends in the trade, and it belongs in any honest guide.
For a great many mid-fleet boats the mainsail is fine and the money should go elsewhere. Before you sign, price these against a new sail:
The hull finish. Fairing and a properly prepared bottom is the cheapest half knot most boats can buy, and nobody sells it to you.
Rig tune. A rig that is out will make a new sail look bad and an old sail look worse. Get it measured before you blame the cloth.
Three days of practice. Boat handling returns more places per pound than anything on this list, and it compounds.
A recut of what you have. Two seasons of shape can sometimes be recovered for a fraction of a new sail, and any loft worth using will tell you honestly whether it can.
If the sails on your boat are genuinely tired, buy. If they are simply not new, get somebody competent to look at them first.
The one question that tells you everything
Here is what four decades of buying sails across six boats actually taught me, and it is not a technical lesson.
Every set of sails that worked came from a relationship with a named individual who told me the truth. Every set that disappointed came from a transaction. The technology varied enormously: woven Dacron on the Sigma’s, laminates on the Swan and the Farr, membrane later. The prices varied by a factor I would rather not put in print. The one variable that tracked the outcome was whether there was a person at the other end who understood the boat, returned the call, and was willing to disagree with me.
That is not a romantic view of small lofts. The named individual can perfectly well work for the largest group in the industry, and often does.
Which gives you the last question.
“Would you ever tell me not to buy a sail?”
A loft that will talk you out of a purchase is selling you judgement, and judgement is the thing most owners are short of. A loft that never does is selling you sails. Both are legitimate businesses. Only one of them is reliably going to make your boat faster this season.
Skin in the game is the phrase. Ask yourself whose season is affected if your sail is wrong.
So what are you really buying?
You are buying a chain.
It begins with an understanding of the boat and how it will be sailed. It runs through aerodynamic design, structural engineering, material selection and manufacture. It ends with fitting, observation, alteration, repair and advice.
The logo can give you access to technology, a design database and worldwide support, and those are worth paying for. But a famous badge cannot compensate for a poor measurement, an inappropriate specification, or a local representative who loses interest once the invoice is paid.
And at the far end of every one of those links there is a person.

The North team back then…
There is a photograph on the North Sails website I did not expect to find while researching this. It was taken at one of Lowell North’s design meetings in the mid 1980s. Twenty-one people, two rows.
Angus Melrose is in the back row. In 1983 I was mast man in the British Victory squad at Newport, and Melrose was the man designing our sails, a North man working for the challenge trying to beat the company that trained him.
Peter Kay is in the front row. Years later he co-founded a loft at Hamble Point and designed and sold me the sails for Silver Shamrock.

Two men, one photograph, one design group. One went to the America’s Cup. The other opened his own loft eight miles from my mooring. Between them, decades apart, they made sails for two of my boats, and I did not know until this month that they had ever been in the same room.
I had thought I was buying from a global brand and then from a local independent. What I was actually buying, both times, was the same thing: a person who had learned his trade somewhere serious and then chosen where to practise it.
The badge on the tack recorded none of that.
Ownership model and geography are evidence, not verdicts. The best sail for your boat may come from the largest group in the industry, a French offshore specialist, a New Zealand membrane plant, an Asian production facility, or a sailmaker cutting panels a few miles from your marina.
What matters is knowing which of those you are buying, and why.
Write the tender pack. Send it to three lofts, and make one of them a small independent you would not otherwise have considered. Then ask all three the these key questions I have outlined here
Somewhere behind every good sail there is a person who once stood in a room like that one, arguing about curves.
Find him.
A note on my own inventory
Having spent six thousand words on how other people should spend their money, it is only fair to say how I spent mine.
Morning After, the 1968 S&S 34, sailed the Round Britain and Ireland in 2022, four-handed with Louise Clayton, Mike Greville and Fred Neville-Jones. We led the fleet overall on corrected time for eight days, lost it becalmed at Muckle Flugga, and won Class 4. Over the season she won IRC Four and the Cowland Trophy, and the Freddie Morgan Trophy for the Best Classic Yacht.
The sails were designed by Mike Redding at Revolution Sails. Drawn in New Zealand. Built in Hong Kong. Finished in Cornwall. The jib cloth came from Dimension-Polyant, panelled and broadseamed into shape rather than moulded.
A Dacron main. Modern non-overlapping jibs and a Code Zero. Conventionally cut symmetric spinnakers.
Which is four countries and one invoice, again. Twenty-two years after Barking Mad and 2XL, and I still could not have told you from the badge where any of it came from.
Nothing in that inventory is exotic. Nothing in it is new. It was well designed rather than over engineered, and it was built to a budget, which is not a polite way of saying cheap. It means every decision in it had a reason, and none of the reasons were about the badge.
It went round Britain and Ireland and won its class, on a boat that had spent twenty-one years in a yard before we rebuilt her. That is what a well specified suit of sails looks like.
