How to win the RORC Myth of Malham offshore race by stopping?

The Myth of Malham looks like a 235-mile offshore race. It isn’t. It is a tidal intelligence test with sails on. Cowes to Eddystone and back sounds simple enough. Leave the Solent, get past the Needles, survive Portland, round the lighthouse, then do the whole thing again in reverse while tired, wet, under-slept and quietly wondering why the boat you crossed tacks with six hours ago is now ten miles ahead on corrected time. That is the Myth. It is not won by people who “see what happens”. It is won by crews who know, before the start, which gates they must make, which ones they can afford to miss, and where they will stop fighting the tide and start using it. The race mirrors the opening section of the Fastnet, but in some ways it is a cleaner test. There is no Rock to mythologise, no Celtic Sea lottery, no grand offshore romance to hide behind. Just the Western Solent, St Alban’s, Portland, Start Point, Eddystone, and the return leg back through the same traps with less sleep and worse judgement. Get the tide right and the Myth flatters you. Get it wrong and it quietly removes your race, one foul stream at a time. This is exactly the sort of race FirstBeat exists for. A generic weather briefing is not enough. A GRIB tells you what the model thinks the wind will do. A routing file tells you what the software thinks the boat should do. But neither tells you what your crew will still be capable of doing at Portland on the way home, in the dark, after the watch system has started to fray. That is the missing layer. That is race intelligence.

The yacht that broke the rule book The race takes its name from one of the most influential offshore racing yachts ever built: Myth of Malham , designed by Jack Laurent Giles for Captain John Illingworth and launched in 1947. Illingworth did not want a gentleman’s cruiser with racing manners. He wanted a rule-reading weapon. The brief was radical for its time: light displacement, short overhangs, no doghouse, no unnecessary furniture, and a sail plan that exploited the post-war RORC rating rule by carrying serious headsail area. The masthead foretriangle was not an accident. It was a deliberate answer to the rule. The result was a 37-foot yacht that looked stripped, purposeful and slightly indecent to the traditionalists. Giles reportedly wanted longer overhangs. Illingworth overruled him. The boat was designed to race, not to reassure anyone. Within months, Myth of Malham had won the 1947 Channel Race and the 1947 Fastnet Race overall. In 1949 she won the Fastnet again, in one of the hardest editions of the race. She later formed part of the British teams that won the Admiral’s Cup in 1957 and 1959. Her later life was less glorious. Sold on, raced, worked, and eventually lost off Ushant in the early 1970s, there is no preserved hull to worship. But the design language survived. Light displacement. Powerful headsails. Short ends. Rule intelligence. A willingness to question the orthodoxy. Every well-sailed JPK, Sun Fast, Ker, J/boat or modern IRC campaign that does damage in the Myth today owes something to that original idea: read the rule, read the weather, read the tide — then build your race around what matters, not what looks traditional.

The race Illingworth gave to the RORC The Myth of Malham Cup was not a posthumous memorial, despite the occasional lazy version of the story. Illingworth presented the cup to the RORC in 1958, long before his death. Since then, the race has become one of the club’s most important early-season offshore tests. It now sits in the RORC Season’s Points Championship, acts as a Fastnet qualifier, and has become a serious form guide for crews who want to know whether their offshore systems are actually race-ready. The course is brutally clean. Start from the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes. Head west through the Solent. Exit past Hurst and the Needles. Work along the Dorset and Devon coast. Round the Eddystone Lighthouse to port. Then come home the same way, finishing at North Head outside the western Solent. On paper, 235 nautical miles. In reality, a sequence of tidal traps linked together by short periods of sailing. The reason crews love it — and fear it — is that it gives you nowhere to hide. The boat may be quick. The crew may be good. The sails may be new. But if your tide sequencing is vague, the Myth will expose you. As one successful Myth skipper put it, the race is about finding the balance between wind strategy and tidal strategy. That is exactly right. But I would go further. The Myth is about knowing when one must dominate the other.

Who wins, and why Look down the honours board and the pattern is obvious. In breeze, the bigger, faster boats can stretch their legs. In transition years, the race opens the door to smaller, well-sailed IRC boats. When the tide and wind refuse to behave neatly, the JPKs, Sun Fasts and disciplined two-handed campaigns start to look very dangerous indeed. That is not a coincidence. The Myth rewards boats and crews that can stay tactically alive when the routing gets messy. Recent history is full of clues. In 2024, Rob Craigie and Deb Fish won overall in the Sun Fast 3600 Bellino , a two-handed campaign sailing with exactly the sort of discipline this race rewards. In 2016, Gilles Fournier and Corinne Migraine’s J/133 Pintia won by eight seconds. Eight seconds, after 235 miles. In 2012, when the race became a survival-of-the-persistent exercise, only three boats finished and Simon and Nikki Curwen won overall in Voador , sailed two-handed by father and daughter. It is long enough to feel offshore, but short enough that one gate, one sail choice, one overstood headland, one bad watch handover or one tired decision can decide the whole thing. The lesson is not that small boats always win. They don’t. The lesson is sharper than that: The Myth rewards preparation over horsepower, tidal sequencing over optimism, and clean execution over heroic improvisation. The fastest boat can win. But the smartest boat often does.

The nine transitions I don’t think of the Myth as one race. I think of it as nine transitions joined together by periods of sailing . That distinction matters. Most crews spend too much time asking, “Are we fast?” Of course speed matters. It always matters. But in this race, the better question is: Are we arriving at the next gate with options? Arriving twenty minutes too late at the wrong headland can erase six hours of beautiful sailing. These are the nine places I would build the race around. 1. Out of the Solent The first trap is pretending the race starts at the Needles. It doesn’t. It starts on the Squadron line. The Western Solent exit is not a warm-up. It is the first gate. The race officers normally set the start to send the fleet west with the tide, but that does not make the exit automatic. Hurst, the Bridge, the Shingles and the Needles Channel all have teeth. The tide can run hard here, particularly around Hurst Narrows, and in a fresh south-westerly the wind-against-tide sea can turn ugly quickly. This is where boats start making emotional decisions. They want clear air. They want a nice lane. They want to get south. They want to avoid the dirty air of the fleet. Fine. But the Solent exit is not about looking elegant. It is about leaving with speed, water, control and the next decision still available. The classic choice is between the Needles Channel and the North Channel. The Needles route is obvious, direct and often right. But in a fresh SW against tide, or if the sea state is already unpleasant, the North Channel can become the grown-up answer but only rarely used when it it’s a spring tide and a strong south westerly setting up big standing waves at Bridge buoy and genrally the smaller boats in class 3 and 4 go north. The key is not choosing it at the last minute. If the North Channel is Plan B, you need to know that ten miles earlier, not when the boat is already being fired towards the Shingles with everyone on deck pretending they are still relaxed. FirstBeat rule: The exit decision is made before the exit.

2. Anvil Point and St Alban’s Ledge The brief sometimes talks loosely about this section, but the tactical feature is not really Anvil Point. It is St Alban’s Ledge . This is one of the most interesting pieces of water on the south coast. The ledge sticks out, the tide accelerates, and the flow can become significantly stronger than the surrounding stream. Used well, it is free distance. Used badly, it is just a washing machine with a view. The classic westbound play, particularly when beating, is to use the accelerated stream by getting onto the favourable tack before the ledge and riding the rip along its length. In the right conditions there can be a real gain here — not because you have found magic water, but because you have combined tide, heading and timing better than the boats around you. But there is a price. Overfalls mean lost boatspeed. A tired helm can give away the gain in two minutes. A boat slamming off waves while the navigator congratulates himself on the tidal call is not winning. So the question is not simply: “Is there more tide inshore?” The question is: Can we use the extra tide without destroying the boat’s mode? That is the proper racing question.

3. Portland Bill outbound Portland is the gate that most often decides the race. Not because it is always the biggest tactical gain, but because it is the easiest place to turn a small timing error into a catastrophic one. Get it right and Portland feels simple. Get it wrong and it becomes the place where your race quietly dies while everyone on deck keeps trimming. The Portland Race is not just “rough water”. It is created by serious tide over aggressive seabed change. In the wrong wind-over-tide conditions, it is not racing water. It is survival water. There are three broad choices. You can go inshore , very close to the Bill, using the narrow passage of smoother water. That can be fast, but it is not a clever shortcut unless the weather, daylight, sea state, traffic, visibility and crew confidence all agree. If one of those votes no, go offshore early and stop pretending bravery is strategy. You can go offshore , giving the Bill proper clearance and accepting that the tide may be weaker out there. This is often the seamanlike answer, especially at night or in bad conditions. Or you can take the racer’s middle path , working the line outside the Shambles and trying to hold enough fair stream without getting dragged into the worst water. That middle option is often where the race is really played. But it requires timing, confidence and a navigator who understands the difference between a routing line and an executable route. The big mistake is arriving marginal and then trying to decide. Portland does not reward indecision. If you are going to be late, hedge early. If you are going offshore, go offshore properly. If you are going inshore, make sure the whole boat knows the plan before the loom of Portland Bill is filling the night. FirstBeat rule: You do not “deal with Portland” when you get there. You deal with Portland before you leave Cowes.

4. Start Point outbound Start Point is easier to underestimate because Portland has taken all the drama. That is a mistake. Start Point has its own race, its own accelerated water, and its own ability to make a tired crew look stupid. The Skerries Bank extends out from the point and the water between the bank and the shore can funnel hard. In daylight, in manageable conditions, the inshore line can save distance and hold useful tide. But again, there is no prize for being bold in the wrong sea state. If the breeze is up, the tide is wrong, or the boat is already being worked hard, the small distance gain can be eaten by poor speed, slamming, bad steering and one untidy sail change. The right question here is: Are we cutting the corner, or are we cutting our own throat? Start Point is a mode decision as much as a navigation decision.

5. The Eddystone Eddystone is the turning mark, but not because the rock itself is tactically complex. The tactical value of Eddystone is compression. Boats arrive from different lanes. The fleet tightens. The leaderboard starts to look different. Crews are tired enough to make ordinary tasks slower. The next sail choice suddenly matters. That is where the race changes shape. The run or reach to Eddystone can look deceptively open. Boats in the same class may do completely different things and all appear plausible for a while. Then, at the lighthouse, the truth begins to appear. What matters is not rounding within touching distance of the rock. There is usually no need to be heroic or greedy. What matters is arriving with the boat under control, the next sail ready, the watch system intact and the navigator already thinking about Start Point and Portland on the way home. This is also where many crews emotionally reset. They think: “We’ve rounded. Now we’re going home.” Wrong. At Eddystone, the race is only just becoming dangerous. Not dangerous in the survival sense, necessarily. Dangerous because fatigue has now joined the decision-making team. 6. Start Point return The return past Start Point often arrives when the crew is starting to fray. That matters. The east-going tide can be helpful. The angles can be fast. The boat may finally feel as if she is pointing towards home. But the headland can still throw gusts, confused water and ugly transitions into the mix. This is where the watch system starts showing its quality. The skipper may be tired. The navigator may be half-awake. The trimmers may have been living on snacks and caffeine for too long. A 20-knot reach can become a 30-knot problem very quickly. That is not a theoretical issue. This part of the coast has a habit of delivering hard gusts to crews who have mentally moved on. The answer is simple and usually ignored: Reef before the problem, not during it. Not every gust requires a reef. But every serious offshore crew should know where the next reefing decision is likely to come before they are already overpowered. Start Point on the way home is where disciplined boats look boring. Boring is fast.

7. Portland Bill return Portland on the way out is important. Portland on the way back is often brutal. By now, the fleet is stretched, the watches are thinner, and the corrected-time race may be impossible to read from the deck. Boats that look beaten may be winning. Boats that look launched may be haemorrhaging time. Then Portland closes the gate. A boat arriving too early against a foul stream can lose miles and morale very quickly. That is where the leaderboard can be rewritten, especially for smaller boats. This is also where crews make one of the worst mistakes in offshore racing: they keep sailing because stopping feels wrong. But the tide does not care how active you feel. If you are sailing into three, four or five knots of foul tide with no realistic way through, you are not being brave. You are paying compound interest on a bad decision. This is why Portland must have a return strategy before the race starts. Not a vague one. A real one. What happens if we arrive early? What happens if we arrive late? Where do we wait? Do we stay offshore? Do we look for weaker tide? Do we anchor? Who makes that call? What is the trigger? If the first time you discuss anchoring is off Portland Bill in the dark with foul tide under the boat, you are not having a tactical conversation. You are having an argument. 8. Anvil Point return The eastbound return through Anvil and St Alban’s is where earlier friends can become enemies. The same tidal features that gave you a useful push or tactical gain going west may be waiting to punish you going east. This is where simple thinking gets dangerous. “We went inshore on the way out” is not a reason to go inshore on the way back. The tide has changed. The angle has changed. The sea state may have changed. The crew has definitely changed. You now have a more tired boat, more tired people and usually less appetite for complex manoeuvres. So the Anvil return is about discipline. Do not cut corners just because the chart makes them look tempting. Do not sail into a foul eddy because the route looks shorter. Do not assume the boat outside you has got it wrong. FirstBeat rule: Never reuse an outbound decision on the return leg without re-testing the reason it worked.

9. Christchurch Bay, the Shingles and the finish The last miles of the Myth are cruel because they look like the end. They are not. Christchurch Bay, the Shingles, Hurst and the approach to North Head have cost more places than many crews care to admit. The tide is still strong. The banks still matter. The wind shadow still matters. And the navigator still needs to be awake. That last point is not a joke. One of the most dangerous phrases in offshore racing is: “We’re nearly there.” Nearly there is where boats stop thinking. Nearly there is where the wrong side of the bank suddenly looks expensive. Nearly there is where a leader parks in less pressure while the chasers stay half a mile out and roll down with breeze. The Shingles decision must be made early. Not at five miles. At ten. By five miles, you should be executing the plan, not inventing it. The final approach to North Head is not ceremonial. It is still part of the race. Keep trimming. Keep navigating. Keep asking where the tide is strongest, where the wind is cleanest, and whether the shortest line is actually the fastest line. The Myth has no respect for boats that mentally finish before the line. When the anchor is a racing accessory (The kedge) In the right place, at the right time, it is a tactical weapon. Modern racing crews hate this idea because stopping feels like failure. It feels passive. It feels like something the cruising boats do while the racers keep fighting. That is exactly why it works. If the tide has shut the gate at Portland and you are a smaller boat with no realistic chance of punching through, continuing to sail can be the emotional decision, not the competitive one. You feel busy. You feel heroic. You also go backwards. Sometimes the winning move is to stop losing. There is a line from Mike Shrives, talking about a light Fastnet, that every Myth navigator should understand: “We kedged best, and that was what made the real difference.” That may sound absurd to a modern crew brought up on routing software, carbon sails and continuous-line furlers. But on a course with six tidal gates, the principle is deadly serious. When the gate slams shut, your choices are simple. You can sail offshore in foul tide and watch your VMG turn ugly. You can scratch around inshore hoping for a private miracle. Or you can stop the boat, hold your position, let the tide cycle through, and start racing again when the sea allows it. That is not cruising. That is tactics.

The day the kedge won the race I am biased on this because I have won this argument the hard way. In the 2016 Myth of Malham, I raced my Ron Holland half-tonner Silver Shamrock two-handed with Nathan Steffenoni. She was the smallest boat in the fleet, 41 years old, rating IRC 0.894. Every faster boat in our class had a better chance of making the Portland gate than we did. We knew that before the start. That was the point. Our plan was not to hope we could do what the faster boats could do. Our plan was to know what we would do when we couldn’t. We arrived at Portland after the tide had turned foul. So we dropped the kedge on the shelf inshore of the Race and sat there for four hours while other boats ground away offshore in foul tide. It is very hard, psychologically, to sit still in a race. Everything in you wants to be moving. The instruments look ridiculous. The boats around you appear to be doing something. You start imagining the tracker, the corrected time, the comments afterwards. But the tide was the race. When the stream turned, we lifted the anchor — and that was not easy, because it had buried itself properly — and then rode the new fair tide west. We came home first in IRC 4 and first in IRC Two-Handed. The kedge did not win the race on its own. Nothing ever does. But the decision to stop fighting a gate we could not make was the decisive move. The following season, explaining how we planned to do it again, I said exactly what I still believe: “Before Portland Bill, we will be making sure we have a good kedge anchor ready to go, as we are unlikely to make the tide. Last year, we were there for four hours but it paid to kedge rather than go offshore.” That is the lesson. Kedging is most valuable for the bottom third of the fleet by waterline — the boats most likely to miss tidal gates and least able to recover the loss by raw speed. But in perverse conditions it can matter for anyone. The gear is not glamorous. A light but powerful kedge. Enough chain. Enough rope. Proper chafe protection. A clean lead. A crew that has actually practised the drill. Not talked about it. Practised it. Dropping the anchor is the easy bit. Getting it back after hours of tide loading is the bit that makes grown sailors go quiet. If you have never rehearsed recovering a properly set kedge in tide, you have not really got a kedging strategy. You have got an anchor on board and a hope. Hope is not a system. Carry it. Rig it. Practise it. And when the gate closes, have the courage to stop.

GRIBs for the strategy. Atlases for the gates. Pre-race, the work happens in routing software. Expedition, Adrena, PredictWind, Tidetech, high-resolution wind models, tidal GRIBs, polars, sail crossovers — all of it matters. Good navigators will compare models, stress-test the route, slow the boat down, speed the boat up, run with tides, run without tides, and ask where the gates move when the forecast changes. That is the professional process. But nobody serious should start the Myth on routing software alone. The problem is not that tidal GRIBs are useless. They are not. The best high-resolution tidal products are extremely valuable, and some now resolve coastal currents at hundreds of metres rather than miles. The problem is that the Myth is decided in places where the meaningful boundary can still be narrower than the model cell, the screen resolution, or the navigator’s confidence. Hurst, St Alban’s, Portland and the Shingles are not places to be seduced by a smooth arrow on a laptop. This is why the Admiralty tidal stream atlases still matter. NP337 for the Solent and adjacent waters. NP257 for Portland and the Portland Race. NP250 for the wider English Channel. These are not nostalgic paper relics. They are decision tools. They force you to think in hours relative to high water. They show where the stream accelerates, where it bends, and where the big picture hides a small but decisive local effect. The routing software may tell you the answer. The atlas helps you decide whether the answer is believable. That is the discipline: GRIBs for the strategy. Atlases for the gates. Use the software to understand the race shape. Use the atlases and pilotage judgement to challenge the dangerous bits. If the route is committing you to the wrong side of a 400-metre boundary off Portland or Hurst, do not blame the software later. The software did what you asked. The navigator failed to ask the next question.

The watch system is part of the routing Most crews plan the route. Fewer plan the decision-making. That is a mistake. A perfect route is useless if the right person is asleep, the wrong person is guessing, and the boat arrives at Portland with no one fresh enough to make the call. For a fully crewed boat, a two-watch system may be fine, with skipper and navigator floating. But “floating” must not become “awake until useless”. The navigator’s sleep has to be protected before the big gates, not after them. For two-handed boats, the issue is even sharper. You cannot brute-force the Myth awake. You have to decide where the brain needs to be fresh and work backwards. Sleep before Portland. Sleep before Eddystone. Sleep before Portland again. The watch system should be built around the decision points, not around a generic offshore rhythm copied from a book. This is where disciplined two-handed campaigns can be so effective. They cannot afford confusion. They cannot afford committee meetings. They cannot afford five people on deck discussing an option that should have been decided six hours earlier. Good two-handed sailing forces clarity. The fully crewed boats should learn from that. FirstBeat rule: Plan not just who is driving, trimming and navigating — plan who is allowed to decide. Sail choices: the race is often won reaching The Myth is not usually won by carrying the biggest kite for the longest time. It is more subtle than that. The most important sails are often the ones that keep the boat fast through awkward angles: Code Zero, J0, reaching sails, A3-type options, and the heavy-weather reaching inventory that lets you keep the boat moving without turning the crew into passengers. The return leg is particularly important. It is often beam-to-broad reaching rather than a clean dead run. Boats with good crossover discipline and reliable furling systems can make large gains simply by changing early, staying in mode and avoiding long periods of compromise. The phrase “we can hold this for a bit” has ruined many races. So has the opposite phrase: “We should probably change, but let’s wait.” If the sail is wrong, change it. If the front is coming, reef before it. If the crew is tired, simplify early. You rarely lose the Myth because you were too organised. You often lose it because you waited until the boat forced the decision on you.

Why two-handed boats keep punching above their weight The two-handed success in this race is not romantic. It is structural. Modern JPKs, Sun Fasts and similar IRC boats are fast, manageable, well optimised for short-handed sailing and often extremely well campaigned. They have good autopilot systems, powerful reaching inventories, efficient deck layouts and crews who know exactly how their boat performs. But the biggest advantage is not the hull. It is clarity. A good two-handed team has no spare bodies and no spare confusion. The decisions are cleaner because they have to be. The manoeuvres are planned because improvisation is expensive. The sleep system matters because there is no human reserve. That mindset is perfect for the Myth. A fully crewed boat can still win, of course. But only if it avoids the great disease of fully crewed offshore sailing: too many opinions, too late, from people who have not done the homework. The two-handed boats are not dangerous because there are only two people on board. They are dangerous because the good ones have usually thought harder before they leave the dock. The winning playbook So what does the Myth actually reward? Not bravery. Not optimism. Not the prettiest routing screenshot. It rewards the boat that has answered the hard questions before the start. Which gates matter most for our rating and speed? Where are we likely to be early? Where are we likely to be late? What happens if Portland shuts? What is our offshore option? What is our inshore option? Are we prepared to anchor? Who makes that call? What is the trigger? What sails are ready for the Eddystone turn? Who is sleeping before the return Portland decision? What is our final Shingles plan before we enter Christchurch Bay? That is the work. The winning boat will not get every call right. Nobody does. But it will make fewer vague calls. It will arrive at the big gates with options. It will know when to press and when to wait. It will understand that there are moments in this race when the tide is not one factor among many. It is the factor. That is what the Myth of Malham Cup rewards. The boat that has done the most thinking before the start gun. The boat that makes the fewest emotional decisions at the worst moments. The boat that understands Portland twice. The boat that keeps its navigator alive until North Head. The Myth does not forgive vague thinking. You do not beat this race by hoping the routing is right. You beat it by knowing where the routing might be wrong, having a second answer ready, and keeping enough brain alive at Portland, twice, to use it. Then you can start racing the boats.
